Rice ($$Oryza sativa$$) plants have porous or hollow organs consisting of aerenchyma, which is presumed to function as a low-resistance diffusion pathway for air to travel from the foliage above the water to submerged organs. However, gas movement in rice plants has yet to be visualized in real time. In this study involving partially submerged rice plants, the leaves emerging from the water were fed nitrogen-13-labeled nitrogen ([$$^{13}$$N]N$$_2$$) tracer gas, and the gas movement downward along the leaf blade, leaf sheath, and internode over time was monitored.

In this study, $$^{11}$$C-photosynthate translocation into strawberry fruits in individual plants was visualized non-invasively and repeatedly using a positron emission tracer imaging system (PETIS) to assess the spatiotemporal variability in the translocation dynamics in response to increasing daylight integrals. This is the first study to use $$^{11}$$C-radioisotopes to clarify the spatiotemporal variability in photosynthate translocation from source leaves to individual sink fruits in vivo in response to increasing daylight integrals at a high spatiotemporal resolution.

The release of rhizodeposits differs depending on the root position and is closely related to the assimilated carbon (C) supply. Therefore, quantifying the C partitioning over a short period may provide crucial information for clarifying root-soil carbon metabolism. A non-invasive method for visualising the translocation of recently assimilated C into the root system inside the rhizobox was established using $$^{11}$$CO$$_{2}$$ labelling and the positron-emitting tracer imaging system. The spatial distribution of recent $$^{11}$$C-photoassimilates translocated and released in the root system and soil were visualised for white lupin ($$Lupinus albus$$) and soybean ($$Glycine max$$). Our method enabled the quantification of the spatial C allocations in roots and soil, which may help to elucidate the relationship between C metabolism and nutrient cycling at specific locations of the root-soil system in response to environmental conditions over relatively short periods.

Accurate analysis of N fixation in leguminous crops requires determination of N utilization within an intact plant$$;$$ however, most approaches require tissue disassembly. We developed a simple and rapid technique to generate high-purity and high-yield [$$^{13}$$N]N$$_2$$ gas and obtained real-time images of N fixation in an intact soybean plant. The purification efficiency was $$sim$$ 81.6% after decay correction.

Mountain development has an influence on long-term changes of uplift, erosion, and groundwater flow related to change in hydraulic gradient. Provenance analysis is one of promising geological methods to understand origin and formation process of mountains. Case study in the Tono area, central Japan has been done for research and development of individual technique to estimate a provenance. In this report, petrological descriptions by meso- and microscopic observations and elemental distributions using scanning X-ray analytical microscope of basement rocks (silicic igneous rocks) from the study area were compiled.

Hydrogeomechanical properties of excavation damaged zones along galleries in different depths of the Horonobe underground research laboratory

The objective of this research is to investigate the hydro-mechanical properties of excavation damaged zones (EDZs) along the galleries excavated in 250 m and 350 m depths. We conducted hydraulic tests, BTV observations and core analyses. As a result, in the 250 m gallery, the extent of the EDZ was 1.0 m into the gallery wall. The hydraulic conductivity was increased by 2 to 3 orders of magnitudes compared with that of intact rock. On the other hand, in the 350 m gallery, the extent of the EDZ was 0.4 m into the gallery wall; the hydraulic conductivity was increased by 5 orders of magnitudes compared with that of intact rock. We investaged the difference of the characteristics of the EDZs on the basis of competence factor and ductility index. As a result, it was estimated that an extent of an EDZ decreases with decrease of competence factor; a hydraulic conductivity in an EDZ increases with decrease of ductility index.

Effect of $$gamma$$-irradiation on latent tracks of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film

The pre-treatment effect of $$gamma$$-irradiation on latent tracks of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films bombarded with swift heavy ions was investigated by electric conductometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation. The Xe-ion bombarded PET films were etched for 6 hours in 0.2 M NaOH aqueous solution at 70$$^{circ}$$C to prepare track-etched membranes. As $$gamma$$-irradiation doses increased in the range of 0-160 kGy, the pore diameter obtained by SEM observation decreased while that obtained by conductometry became large. This inconsistent result between the two methods was due to an increase in the crosslinked region in the latent tracks caused by $$gamma$$-irradiation.

The ${it Arabidopsis frill1}$ (${it frl1}$) mutant, that has serrated petals and sepals but no other large changes in plant morphology, was studied. The ${it frl1}$ had a mutation in ${it STEROL METHYLTRANSFERASE 2}$ and an altered sterol composition. It was found that the ${it frl1}$ mutation causes ectopic endoreduplication in petal tips that do not normally endoreduplicate. The rosette leaves of ${it frl1}$ also showed an enhanced level of endoreduplication, but their morphology was hardly affected. These facts suggest that the suppression of endoreduplication is important for petal morphogenesis and the normal sterol composition is required for this suppression.

A high average power tunable solid state laser is pumped by the second harmonic of LD-pumped high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser consisting of a single-longitudinal-mode oscillator and amplifiers. To operate the Nd:YAG laser oscillator with a single-longitudinal-mode by injection seeding, the cavity length control is required to coincide the resonant frequency of Nd:YAG laser oscillator with the frequency of seeder. For this purpose, a cavity length control system of the Nd:YAG laser oscillator is developed and the characteristics are studied. With this system, the cavity length is controlled at the pulse repetition rate of 0.5 kHz and the single frequency operation for more than three hours is realized.

Characterizations of heavy ion irradiated PET membranes

Various characterization were used to study the effect of heavy ion irradiation on a poly(ethylen terephthalate)(PET) membrane. My study was followed using some dynamic and thermal measurements with the aim to undestand the chemical change in the material by heavy ion irradiation. The anyalyese included DMA, tensile measurement, DSC and micro-FT-IR. The overall structure change in the PET polymer was investigated as a function of the Xe ion fluence in the range from 3$$times$$10$$^{3}$$ to 3$$times$$10$$^{9}$$ions/cm$$^{2}$$. Based on some mechanical measurements such as the tensile analysis and dynamic test, the heavy ion irradiated PET membranes exhibited a significant change in cross-linking. I believe that the secondary electron induced by collision between the irradiated ion and the constituent atoms of the membrane material form the cross-linking. The polymer chain scission and structure degradations are expected to result at higher ion fluence. Also, a slight change in the structure such as amorphization has been shown by DSC and the micro-FT-IR test.

Gas-permeation control by PET membranes with nanosized pores

The poly(ethylen terephthalate)(PET) membrane, which has a membrane thickness of 12$$mu$$m, was used in this study. PET is a polymer widely used for fibers, films and bottles. It was assumed that for PET, which is often used as a gas barrier film, it is easy to effect changes in its gas permeability by modification, such as by ion irradiation. Previously, I reported the effect of heavy ion irradiation on the gas permeation of a PET membrane. A portion of the heavy ion irradiated PET membranes exhibited the Knudsen flow during the gas permeation measurements. As a next step, therefore, I applied an etching technique utilizing NaOH solution to control the nanosized pore of the heavy ion irradiated PET membrane. PET membranes irradiated at a fluence of 3$$times$$10$$^{9}$$ ions/cm$$^{2}$$ were etched in 6N or 1N NaOH solution at 60$$^{circ}$$C. The etching time was controlled to observe the changes in the gas permeation behavior depended on the etchig. This objective has consequently been used to control the Knudsen flow.
